The Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence (NICNE) is a program of NIU's Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development, located at NIU-Rockford. NICNE has worked to strengthen area nonprofits for the past fifteen years by providing capacity building, training, technical assistance and resource support to organizations within northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Its mission is to promote and grow innovation, excellence and social impact.

Available services and training include: Education including board training, the Certificate in Nonprofit Management courses, and special workshops and programs. Customized services include collective impact work, strategic planning, customized board training, and consultant services including grant writing and business planning. Resources available include: nonprofit best practices, policies and procedures, employee handbooks, and 501 (c) (3) development.

NICNE believes in investing in people and organizations that make communities in our area safer, healthier, and more vibrant. We do so by providing training opportunities, which help nonprofits successfully achieve their missions. As the region's primary resource for nonprofit capacity and movement building, we encourage collaboration and best practices that result in a strong, vibrant nonprofit sector demonstrating significant social impact.

Current News:

NICNE has convened a number of community-based organizations, foundations, and other partners to address local needs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 815 Community Response Team has established a website with information about funding and many other helpful resources.
