Workshop Overview
The strategic governing board has important work to do on behalf of its organization - primarily, ensuring the organization remains viable into perpetuity. This work requires discipline and focus to set strategies, enable strong operational management, provide guidance, establish policies, and ensure financial stability while leaving day to day management of the organization to the chief executive officer and staff (either paid or unpaid).
Effective boards are strategic boards, and work should focus on the strategic rather than the tactical. In this workshop, Stephanie will provide a brief overview of the various types of boards and discuss a common path for board evolution. She will share a framework for you to think around the roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, staff team, and volunteers in relation to management and governance of the organization. She will also lead discussion around strategies to shift board conversations from tactical to strategic to ensure the best use of the board's limited time together. During this workshop, attendees will be engaged in discussion and activities to learn from one another, consider possible shifts in governance strategy to make space for more strategic conversations, and actively explore how these strategies can be applied to each unique organization.
